Basilica of Our Lady of Health in Pátzcuaro

Churches and cemeteries

This might be the most important building in the city of Pátzcuaro; it was built on a Purépecha pyramid during the 16th century. Its original design copied that of the Granada Cathedral in Spain. Its interior houses the image of the Virgin of Health, elaborated with corn cane paste.

It was known as the Cathedral of Pátzcuaro until January 23th 1923 when the diocese headquarters moved to Morelia, where a new cathedral was built. The lateral chapel shelters the urn with the remains of Don Vasco de Quiroga.
